25 Years of Kaiji The GenreDefining Gambling Series That Never Stood

Kaiji - Ultimate Survivor TV (26 eps) 2007 - 2008 Kaiji Ito is as pathetic a person as they come; a man who gambles his days away, only winning enough to lose significantly more. He hates himself, is riddled with envy for others, but is ultimately too weak to think of a way out of his massive debts.

Kaiji. Akagi's personality is intriguing and how level headed and eerily calm he is. It revolves around one game generally, which is immersive initially but one tires eventually. But Kaiji represents so much desire, suffering, longing and everything that is human.

Kaiji the anime does an especially good job with this, and in fact, the entire anime is an enjoyable experience that avoids all the mistakes of Akagi. It's one of the most unique anime I've ever seen, and I don't expect to see anything like it again. Part of what makes Kaiji so good are the ingenious games Noboyuki cooked up for this series.

16 sebasTLCQG OP • 2 yr. ago I dont know, Kaiji by 6th part, became really really smart and he had more higher stakes gambles than Akagi. I´d assume Kaiji would be stomped in a regular money gamble, but if it´s a gamble with higher stakes like heavy injury or death they´d both be pretty tied up 5 [deleted] • 2 yr. ago peegmay • 2 yr. ago

Kaiji on the other hand, has fairly simple games where it's easy to spot potential mindgames + the twists that actually happen are easy to follow, which helps it a lot. But I know some people don't like the MC of Kaiji, because being pathetic is kind of his character, he's not a badass like Akagi (or the male lead in Liar Game).

Kaiji and Akagi are very different in a lot of key ways as well and this makes for a very interesting comparison. Akagi Akagi, subtitled as "The Genius Who Descended into Darkness" was first published as manga in 1991. In Japan alone it has sold over 12 million copies and adapted as several movies and television shows.

6 Akagi: Iwao Washizu. Kaiji 's Kazutaka Houdou has his moments, but the president of the Teiai Corporation would be eaten alive by Akagi 's Iwao Washizu. An extremely powerful force in the anime's underground scene, Washizu is a sadistic billionaire who uses his riches to motivate weaker people to gamble their lives away.
